Sawyer County Literacy Board of Trustees

  • Duane Arndt, Treasurer

Duane has been a lifetime educator as a teacher, administrator, and adult education instructor. He has also been active in his communities volunteering in various capacities and organizations. Pages could be written, containing all of his accomplishments! (including his hunting prowess!) Duane is a compassionate and capable, long-time supporter of Literacy and we are most fortunate to have this “Keep Calm! I Know Math!” person as SCL’s Treasurer since the Trustee Board’s inception.

  • Holly Moses, Vice-President

Holly has been a long-time tutor and supporter of SCL and graciously agreed to service on our Board of Trustees since becoming a 501.c3 nonprofit organization. She has a rich personal and professional background and a genuine willingness to serve. She is affectionately referred to as the “Go anywhere, do anything, Jill of all trades!” She has also been our acting president, since that position has been vacant. We’re grateful to have her on our Board, in addition to being an active tutor!

  • Frank Helquist, Secretary

All around Secretary for SCL and its Coordinator in particular, Frank is another great supporter of literacy and education. Coming from a long career as a teacher, administrator, innovator, and more, he can always be counted on to think outside the box and keep all of us on our toes. Frank has been supporting SCL long before he was a Trustee and continues to do so in the most unusual and creative ways, even when he tutors! He brings a brand of innovation that SCL is most grateful for!

  • Aura Lea Carrell

Aura Lea is a long-time career educator from elementary-Adult ed.

When I retired as a high school special education teacher, I began working part-time for WITC (now Northwood Tech) with incarcerated individuals at Sawyer County Jail. I connected with Deb and Sawyer County Literacy folks as we shared space and many students in that setting. Her passion ignited my involvement and keen interest in all types of literacy and lifelong learning. Since that time, I have added another jail and work with adults at the Hayward Outreach Center.

In Memory of Deb Helquist (1953-2025)

Sawyer County Literacy Founder

Sawyer County Literacy began in 2015 when Deb had a dream of meeting the literacy needs of Adult Learners who needed help in taking “that next step” in life.

Deb was the Coordinator of SCL, a tutor, and also a member of the Board as a non-voting Trustee. She coordinated all things having to do with tutors, volunteers, learners, communications, and general day to day operations of SCL. Her background was in education and counseling, and she loved all things “people”! That’s why she lauded the other Board Members for their marvelous talents and abilities that bloom and produce on behalf of SCL. She was extremely passionate about our Literacy endeavors and so thankful for the Board of Trustees. She loved each and every Learner!

The Trustees are committed to continuing and expanding the work that Deb started.

Sawyer County Literacy (SCL) has a volunteer Board of Trustees that oversees the operations of SCL. This Board was created in 2020 when SCL became a nonprofit organization. (501.c3)

The Board of Trustees typically meets a few times per year usually via ZOOM.

The Trustees invite individuals who may have an interest in serving on this Board to contact SCL.
