Inmate Literacy Opportunities

Inmate Literacy Opportunities

Besides working in the community, Sawyer County Literacy tutors have a positive relationship with Lt. Mike Woller, the Jail staff, and Becky Barry and the Justice Point staff at the Sawyer County Jail. We offer Literacy services there, too.  We have the same types of offerings there as in the community with a few exceptions in accordance with law enforcement’s regulations for inmates and tutors.

SCL tutors have worked with female inmates at the Sawyer County Jail since 2016 and recently with male inmates, especially in Math starting in 2023.  All Literacy learners’ goals are driven by them, to help move them closer to self-improvement, whether it’s for a GED/HSED, other academic goal, or personal learning interest.  Books, textbooks, and other appropriate materials for individuals’ growth are provided, free of charge. Many of these resources have been funded, like Chromebooks and laptops, by WI Literacy, just for inmates’ use during Literacy sessions.

We also have a very good working relationship with the Northwood Technical College GED/HSED instructor at the Jail, Aura Lea Carrell, as well as the instructor at the Hayward Outreach Center.  SCL jail tutors and the Northwood instructor cooperate so that the Literacy learner can make. even faster progress on her/his GED or HSED when studying with both agencies!

So, if you know of someone who is incarcerated at the Sawyer County Jail, and Literacy might be for them, please contact Deb, the SCL Coordinator for more information.  Or let the incarcerated individual know about us and they can ask to see a Literacy tutor.
