Sawyer County Literacy Welcomes You!

Sawyer County Literacy (SCL) is a small nonprofit (501.c3) Literacy agency that has worked with and tutored adult learners in Sawyer and adjacent counties since 2016, including the County Jail. All our services are free of charge and SCL is totally run by volunteers.

Our major emphasis is to encourage and come alongside learners to help them become more of who they’d like to be or can be — learners with a variety of goals and needs. (For a list of what SCL offers, Click “Become A Learner” below to learn more!)

Tutors and learners meet at various public places in the area. SCL also has a Learning and Resource Center which is located at LCO Ojibwe University (LCOOU) where we support their GED/HSED program and other LCOOU areas. We also enjoy close collaboration with WI Literacy (our main sponsor), Northwood Technical College, and local agencies and schools to support our learners in the best way possible.

The SCL Learning and Resource Center houses a collection of FREE adult and children’s books to encourage reading in the community. Contact us if you’d like some!

***Our SCL Center is currently open by appointment via the Coordinator, Deb. Contact info below.***

Become a Tutor or Other Valuable Volunteer

Volunteering as a tutor is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have! When you assist someone with their Literacy goals, you can help that individual take advantage of a new world of opportunities – at home, at work, and in the community.

Volunteer tutors play key roles that can positively impact adult learners’ lives. And visa-versa - both sides win!

Tutors typically meet one-on-one with learners in various locations. And not to worry—tutor training, supplies, and support is there for you, individualized for each tutor’s needs!

Besides tutoring, there are other vital volunteer opportunities - working behind the scenes in a variety of ways.

Community Resources

Our major emphasis is to encourage and come alongside learners to help them become more of who they’d like to be or can be — learners with a variety of goals and needs.

Sawyer County Literacy has many resources and materials available for our learners! Plus, our learners can have even greater potential because we also count on the fantastic support and cooperation of other Community Resources and Agencies!

Family Literacy

So, what does “Family Literacy” mean?  It’s really very simple!  It’s about adults (parents, grandparents, guardians), or siblings, etc. in a family reading to each other!

SCL Learning and Resource Center has a collection of FREE adult and children’s books for you to enjoy!  We want to encourage reading and Family Literacy in the community!  Contact us if you’d like to choose some to take home!

Literacy for Inmates

SCL has worked with female inmates at the Sawyer County Jail since 2016 and recently with male inmates, especially in Math starting in 2023.  All Literacy learners’ goals are driven by them, to help move them closer to self-improvement, whether it’s for a GED/HSED, other academic goal, or personal learning interest.
